Question 34 -Hysterectomy And Withholding HRT for 6 Weeks (Posted April 8, 2000)

Hi, I am scheduled for a complete hysterectomy including removal of both ovaries, in May. In discussing hormone replacement therapy with my OB/GYN he mentioned having me "bite the bullet" after surgery until the 6-week check-up. The reasoning behind this seems to be an opportunity to see what and how severe my menopausal symptoms will be and then chart a course of HRT. Is this the typical length of time to wait before prescribing something? I have also read of surgeons who apply an estrogen patch immediately following surgery. I don't want to jump right into something without knowing all the risks/benefits of the HRT, but I don't want to be miserable for 6 weeks, either. Please give me your thoughts. Thank you!

I would wonder if you were the surgeon, how he would feel about the prospect of "biting the bullet" for six weeks if you were removing his testicles, in essence castrating him, which is precisely what he is planning to do to you. Somehow, I think that he would not go one hour, let alone one day without replacing his male hormone.
