Question 39 - Failure
of Premarin and Estroven to Relieve Menopausal Symptoms
(Posted April 18, 2000)
Dr N,
I had a total hysterectomy last June. I was put on premarin 1.25mg. I was having hot flashes and mood swings and
my sex life was awful. I took it upon myself to try something different. I started taking an over the counter medicine
called estroven. I have been taking this for 30 days and I still do not see a change. Can you suggest something
for me?
Hi,
As you have already discovered, oral HRT, including Premarin, will not
relieve symptoms in all menopausal women. In addition, I don't believe that the Estroven can help you. There is
no evidence that I am aware of that Estroven can significantly reduce menopausal symptoms or provide protection
from the long term negative health affects of hormone deprivation.
I think that the first thing to do is carefully read the sections of the web site, Hysterectomy and
Menopausal Symptoms, as they specifically address your problem and will provide you with some insight. In
addition, the more of the web site you are able to read, the more prepared you will be to participate in the decision
making process from an informed point of view. This would provide the potential benefit of enhancing your quality
of life, health and longevity.
After you have done this, please get back to me with further questions and I will try and make more specific suggestions
for you to discuss with your physician.
