Question 52 - Subcutaneous implants/testosterone
(Posted August 7, 2000)
Dear Dr. N,
Could you please explain what a subcutaneous implant is in regards to delivery
of the hormone Testosterone ? You indicated in your information that this method rarely fails to establish libido...also
is it an expensive procedure ? does it require surgery? do you know if the procedure is covered by health insurance
?...any side effects/negatives ?...is it a one-time procedure? how long will it last? thanking you in advance..

Hi,
The implant is inserted into the subcutaneous tissue with a device which is
basically a large needle. The pellets inserted are usually estradiol and/or testosterone. It is absorbed slowly
into the bloodstream over a number of months. The first implant is usually effective for 3-4 months and subsequent
implants are needed from 4-6 months in most cases depending on individual absorption and response.
I have found that this is a safe and effective procedure and have actually found fewer instances of side effects
than the more routine HRT regimens.
Some insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost, which may range from $150-$350. College Pharmacy,
a link to whose web site is on my useful links page, is a supplier of the pellets and may know if someone in your
area is doing this procedure and may have other information available.
