Question 85

I had a hysterectomy and my doctor said I didn't need HRT anymore

Dear Doctor N:

I had a total hysterectomy (ovaries included) several years ago and was placed on premarin. Recently my doctor took me off premarin stating it was no longer considered effective, etc. and told me I no longer need hrt. I'm confused. I was told when the hysterectomy was performed I'd always have to take something. I've read as much as I can find on the topic of surgical hysterectomies, but no one seems to have addressed this question. Should I be taking something or no?

My own recommendation is that my patients remain on HRT indefinitely as long as they are comfortable with that thought as I believe most will feel better and live longer. There are relatively few absolute contraindications to appropriately administered HRT. The most important issue here is that you make this decision and that it not be dictated to you especially as in this case when there is no reasonable rationale for it. Look at it this way: how soon do you think he would stop taking testosterone if someone had removed his testicles?

One way, or the other, do what is good for you and what you are comfortable with. There are lots of doctors around.

I would read the section of the web site, Hormone Deficiency as it may provide further insight.
